Whether you are looking to resolve specific movement, performance or behavior issues, need help with rehabilitation and recovery from injury or illness, or have a horse with colic or pregnancy/in-season issues for which a vet has advised this treatment, myofascial release (MFR) can help.  Regularly scheduled treatments can also be effective in catching problems early, or helping maintain peak performance.

Treatment allows for increased tissue pliability and blood flow, resulting in pain relief and greater freedom of movement.

I provide equine myofascial release therapy in Chico, Butte County and surrounding areas. Trailering in to Sheltering Oaks Farm (shelteringoakfarms.com) in Chico for treatment is also available (small trailer fee applies).  For travel in the greater Northern California area and beyond, please contact me for more information.

WHAT DOES A MYOFASCIAL RELEASE THERAPIST DO?

During treatment, I will have my hands on your horse’s body using gentle pressure and long duration holds into the fascial restriction. This allows the tissue to gently elongate and release tension. The fascia system of a horse is a three dimensional web structure, therefore, many layers of restriction can exist in an affected area of the horse’s body. Once an area of tension is released, there is often another barrier to follow. My hands will keep steady, gentle pressure while following the release of fascia restriction to the next barrier and continuing along the line of tension.

What to expect
at your first appointment

Each horse is unique. Their treatment should be too.

At first introduction, I will get to know you and your horse with an assessment, postural analysis, and discussion of needs and goals.  In order for your horse to feel as safe and comfortable as possible, I may have you hold his/her lead.  I may also begin with a Masterson Method Bladder Meridian technique to calm the nervous system and find areas of blockages and restrictions. I will then begin treatment on those areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a treatment session?

You should plan for around 1 1/2 hours for the first session to allow for intake. Subsequent treatments are approximately an hour.

2

Can I ride or train after treatment?

Unless the treatment is specific to a performance or competition (for example, attending a show and MFR is needed for performance enhancement), I often advise a quiet walk or turn out (if available) after treatment to allow for integration.

3

How often should my horse be treated?

Treatment is often dependent upon on the nature of the injury, illness and or goal. It may be that two or three sessions alleviate the issue or that a series of regular treatments is necessary.
